Figs have been  famous for thousands of years. Like the olive tree, the fig tree is a biblical tree repeatedly cited in sacred texts. In ancient times, it was an object of veneration, in India it was a sacred tree, in Rome images of Saturn were crowned with its leaves. The father of medicine

Hippocrates recommended them for acute feverish states, to quench the thirst and appetite of the sick and combat malnutrition with them.

Since ancient times, cakes and various desserts have been made with dried figs . The fig is preserved dried in the sun or in jams.

Figs are the fruit of the fig tree , currently more than 700 species are known. There are fig trees that give two annual productions, one in June whose fruits are larger and of greater commercial value, they are called  brevas . The other harvest is from mid-August until the first cold days.

      What do figs give us?

The edible species are very digestive because they contain a substance called cradin,  which is a digestive ferment and high in fiber , improving intestinal transit, which is why it is also used as a laxative , if eaten in large quantities it can be purgative . They also provide organic acids, salts such as potassium 0.2%, calcium 0.05% and vitamins A, B1, B2 and C. It contains 81% water and a high content of carbohydrates 16%. On the other hand, if we consume them dry they have 16% water, 73% carbohydrates, 4.5% protein and 1.5% fat. It does not lose salts or vitamins in this state. Unripe fruits are toxic to the stomach.

      Who should eat them?

Due to its alkalinity, it is a fruit well tolerated by acid-sensitive people. It is optimal as an extra energy contribution consuming them before doing sports, both in children and adults. It serves for people with constipation acting as a laxative. It is not recommended for diabetics due to its high sugar content, nor for obese people due to its high energy value.

     How to consume them

In gastronomy it has very varied uses:

  • Accompanying savory dishes of salted meat, game…
  • In confectionery, to make desserts and jams .
  • Obtain liqueur de higo , which is an alcoholic beverage based on aguardiente (anise).
  • Fig bread (dried pressed figs with almonds).
